“ETEREA” Emotions, Therapies and Stories Autoimmune Encephalitis is a project born from the idea that storytelling is ‘healing’ and, when done “together,” even more so.
It is a project that aims to give everyone the opportunity to tell their story: people with the disease, caregivers, family members, friends, and all of our stories, our voices collected and published in a book by a publishing house, will help raise awareness of this insidious and devastating disease.
At a time when medicine has achieved important technological advances and the concept of evidence-based medicine is now very familiar, there is an increasing need to restore the doctor-patient-society relationship, where the person with the disease’s narrative to the doctor is considered on a par with the clinical signs and symptoms of the disease itself. Narrative medicine is thus an innovative approach that focuses on the stories of people with diseases in the medical context and is an essential element of medicine based on the active participation of those involved in the choices.
The aim of this project is therefore twofold:
• to contribute to the well-being of people with diseases by valuing their stories—and those of their families and caregivers—through storytelling and writing, which helps to understand their experiences and promotes the doctor-patient relationship;
• to provide clinicians with a tool to understand the experience of people with diseases and improve treatment adherence and concordance for patients, reducing conflict.
Various storytelling tools will be used (stories on the website, posts/reels on social media channels) with opportunities for discussion and training with professionals in the field (creative writing, etc.), culminating in the publication of a book collecting all the stories (December 2026).
An editorial team will always be available to support, discuss, and create our stories.
