The City of Turin, on the initiative of AISiDiR APS, the Italian Association of Rare Dysimmune Syndromes of the Central Nervous System, has decided to light the Mole Antonelliana in red on the occasion of the World Encephalitis Day, promoted by Encephalitis International worldwide to direct attention on this insidious disease, of which there are many manifestations not always immediately recognizable and often not diagnosed in time to combat them effectively.
Thanks to this initiative, Turin is at the forefront of efforts to raise awareness about encephalitis and a wide network of non-profit organizations worldwide, with the collaboration of public and private entities, promotes throughout the world and that on this day finds a collective public expression.
AISiDiR APS was born a few months ago and – although it is focused on a particular group of rare encephalitis, the Autoimmune Encephalitis – immediately considered it essential to bring this pathology into light in general and propose to the city a significant symbolic act.
When treating a rare disease, it is particularly important to spread knowledge about it to allow those who suffer from it and care to get out of isolation and discover the possibility of interacting with other families to exchange experiences and even “tricks” of daily co-existence with the disease, but it is equally important to raise awareness in the scientific and medical field and facilitate the identification of systemic management solutions by the health service to simplify diagnosis and treatment of the disease.
